Entry 6: FOR THE GIRLS: ITS WESLEY'S WORLD

One thing about toddlers is that they can turn the most normal, everyday moments into something exciting. Lately, watching my son Wesley has reminded me how important it is for kids to just be outside and experience the world around them. In a time where screens and technology are everywhere, sometimes the best thing for kids is simply fresh air, a little freedom, and space to explore. Right now, Wesley is completely obsessed with TWO  things: airplanes and his toddler bike. Anytime we go outside, the first thing he does is listen for planes. The second he hears one, everything else stops. He tilts his head up toward the sky , points as fast as he can, and yells “Plane!” like it is the most exciting thing he has ever seen. Sometimes the plane is so far away it’s barely visible, but that doesn’t matter to him at all. To Wesley, it’s still amazing. And honestly, it makes me stop and notice it too. As adults, we hear planes all the time and barely even think about it. But seein...

Entry 3: FOR THE GIRLS: ICE COLD

The small white disk. Something you do not think about until you are shaking in into your hand. Small and almost fragile like, much like a piece of pressed snow. As soon as it is tossed into my mouth, that is when it all hits. I am not the type of person who lets outside things stop them in their tracks but this small white disk... changes everything.

First comes the sweetness the feeling of being clean and refreshed. It is shy and calm. The way a hot shower feels after a long and hot day in the sun. Especially in Arizona. Then BAM it hits like a freight train, a cold, icy feeling spreads though my mouth like I just stepped back onto the frozen lake at sunrise again. It tingles, its sharp and mind-opening but also relaxing in the same sense. A feeling as if you are breathing in crisp sparkling air. The first chill of winter after brutally hot summer.

It reminds me of what it felt like to stand in the Article Circle (photo above) with the fresh snow glowing on the mountains so brightly it hurts your eyes, the quiet of the nature surrounding you, the mist of your breath in the sky every time you breath. It is not a harsh cold, its a clean cold. It's invigorating. It's awakening. This little white disk brings all that to life without a trip to Alaska. The little white disk melts in your mouth quickly but the feeling it leaves fills the lungs with a freshness that opens the lungs up. For something this little, it carries the power of an entire frozen landscape-like the Article Circle- it is bold, bracing, impossible to ignore, and addicting.
