Entry 6: FOR THE GIRLS: ITS WESLEY'S WORLD

One thing about toddlers is that they can turn the most normal, everyday moments into something exciting. Lately, watching my son Wesley has reminded me how important it is for kids to just be outside and experience the world around them. In a time where screens and technology are everywhere, sometimes the best thing for kids is simply fresh air, a little freedom, and space to explore. Right now, Wesley is completely obsessed with TWO  things: airplanes and his toddler bike. Anytime we go outside, the first thing he does is listen for planes. The second he hears one, everything else stops. He tilts his head up toward the sky , points as fast as he can, and yells “Plane!” like it is the most exciting thing he has ever seen. Sometimes the plane is so far away it’s barely visible, but that doesn’t matter to him at all. To Wesley, it’s still amazing. And honestly, it makes me stop and notice it too. As adults, we hear planes all the time and barely even think about it. But seein...

For The Girls: The Blog Edition

For as long as I could remember, blogs have been something women can relate to. It made us feel less alone in issues we were dealing with such as difficult children, weight gain, ruining out of ideas for dinner, and a million other things women go through on a daily basis.  Blogs used to be long, and text heavy. You would scroll for minutes before you would reach the end. Now, blogs are no longer have the limitation of just a website. They are podcasts, videos, and TikToks; they are catching the attention of a new audience.

Through Videos, podcast, curated posts on social media, bloggers have been able to continue to create spaces that make women feel safe and heard. Sam Laura Brown is a wonderful example of this, she has created a space that always everyone to feel safe not just women. She not only has a written blog but she also has a podcast. With each blog post there is a duplicate podcast, this allows people to experience what she is trying to teach in multiple ways.

Sam Laura Brown's is also extremely calming. With soft colors, easy to read fonts, and easy to follow prompts to get readers exactly where they need to go.  She very much understands her audience, starting with an option to subscribe for daily motivational emails as the first thing you see. Although Sam Laura Brown's blog is soft, calming and structured to self motivation, not all blogs need to be like that.

Not all blogs are built the same but use the same foundation, For example Mermaidens blog is bright and colorful. She uses BOLD images, vibrant colors, and uses her personal style to shine in her blog. Although her blog does not come with podcast connected to them, she is a wonderful example of a blog that still makes women feel safe but in a different way. She shares her favorite things, makeup products, recipes that she baking, and knitting, almost like being at a slumber party. Even though her blogging style is extremely different there is still the same message coming across.

While both amazing blog showcase how much blogging has involved and become much more then long written stories, they are both dramatically different from each other. From calm colors and podcasts to bold and expressive, they both are able to successfully create spaces where women feel understood and supported, Which is the foundation of these blogs. The contrast of these two examples also show that no two blogs are going to be the same and there is not correct way to create a blog. The most important thing, both blogs create connections, show creativity and authenticity, which allows the audience to resonate with their writing.

  1. Good job on this practice post. You have a clear understanding of the necessary parts of a post: setup, point, and sign off. Thoughtful considerations in your analysis of the blogs and their content, organization, and rhetoric. Don't forget to include citation/image source information for any images.
