Entry 6: FOR THE GIRLS: ITS WESLEY'S WORLD
One thing about toddlers is that they can turn the most normal, everyday moments into something exciting. Lately, watching my son Wesley has reminded me how important it is for kids to just be outside and experience the world around them. In a time where screens and technology are everywhere, sometimes the best thing for kids is simply fresh air, a little freedom, and space to explore.
Right now, Wesley is completely obsessed with TWO things: airplanes and his toddler bike.
Anytime we go outside, the first thing he does is listen for planes. The second he hears one, everything else stops. He tilts his head up toward the sky, points as fast as he can, and yells “Plane!” like it is the most exciting thing he has ever seen. Sometimes the plane is so far away it’s barely visible, but that doesn’t matter to him at all. To Wesley, it’s still amazing.
And honestly, it makes me stop and notice it too. As adults, we hear planes all the time and barely even think about it. But seeing how excited he gets over something so simple is a reminder of how naturally curious kids are about the world.
Then there’s his toddler bike, which has basically become his entire personality lately. The moment we step outside, he runs straight for it like he’s about to head out on the most important bike ride of his life. He rides up and down the sidewalk with so much determination and pride, like he’s on some kind of mission. It might just be a little toddler bike, but to him it’s a huge adventure.
Watching moments like this really makes me think about how important outdoor play is for kids. Being outside gives them the chance to move, explore, and notice the little things around them. A plane flying overhead becomes exciting. A bike ride down the sidewalk feels like a big accomplishment. Kids don’t need a lot to have fun. They just need the opportunity to experience the world.
I also think kids remind adults to slow down a little. Life gets busy, and it’s easy to rush through the day without paying attention to the small things. But when Wesley stops everything to point at a plane or proudly rides his bike down the sidewalk, it reminds me that those little moments actually matter.
At the end of the day, childhood doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes it’s just about riding a bike, looking up at the sky, and getting excited about airplanes. And honestly, watching Wesley enjoy those simple moments makes me appreciate them a lot more too.
